Neighbor turns homeowner's Halloween decorations into a paid tour stop, and has the audacity to complain when he cuts power when tourists enter his yard: ‘He'd advertised it as an interactive photo stop’

AITJ for turning off my Halloween decorations in the middle of my neighbor's paid tour?
I spent the last couple weeks decorating my front yard for Halloween. Went a little overboard with animatronics, lights and a fog machine.

My neighbor runs Halloween walking tours every October and asked if he could stop outside my house so people could see the decorations. I said sure, didn't see any problem with that.

Yesterday evening he showed up with about 20 people. At first they were taking pictures from the sidewalk, but then he started inviting them into my yard to pose with the decorations. Some were even sitting on my front steps.

I went outside and told him I'd agreed to people looking from the sidewalk, not walking around my property. He said he'd advertised it as an interactive photo stop and people had specifically paid for that experience.

I told him that wasn't something we'd discussed. He asked me to just let this group finish since they were already there, but I refused and switched off the decorations.

He got pretty angry and said I'd basically ruined that part of the tour and given customers a reason to leave bad reviews or demand refunds. My wife thinks I should've let them finish and told him not to do it again.

I feel like he should've asked before promising people access to my yard, but I can see how shutting everything down on the spot was a bit much. AITJ?

Halloween front yard decorations with a smiling scarecrow.
nazuswahs There's liability issues if someone is injured on your property. Best to keep folks in the sidewalk.

Luna-Strange NTJ. Its your property. Ask him for a cut of the money and force guests to sign waiver for any damage or if they get hurt

Individual-Ebb8583 NTJ, I would have done the exact same thing. He is advertising and receiving payments for something illegal (trespassing on your property). He should have discussed with you first and even paid you for people trampling your grass.

RickRussellTX NTJ. Looking at ppl's yards for Halloween or Xmas is a longstanding tradition. Entering yards and messing with the decorations? Totally over the line!

_mandycandy NTJ- who the h I is paying some guy to chaperone them on the public sidewalk?? Seems like he oversold them so they could have photo opportunities with YOUR stuff. He should get his own props

CatsMom4Ever NTJ. He seriously overstepped!

Elaborate Halloween decorations with a towering spooky figure.
No-Bobcat-6953 So he's selling photo experiences in your decorated yard? And then got mad at you for not wanting his customers to walk around your yard and sit on your steps? That's mighty ballsy, selling tickets to your house!

Much Development7084 NTJ. Shut that down quick. First of all. He didn't ask for permission to enter your yard. Second, if someone gets hurt. You could be held liable.

Total-Object-4766 NTA he lied to you. "Looking" is totally different from "Interacting". Your homeowners insurance won't cover any accidents as a result of his side hustle. F' him for lying and putting you and your property at risk.

radomed Having them on your property is an Insurance liability. Especially since they paid for the tour.

PlantyPenPerson NTJ My husband decorates for Halloween and keeps people out of the yard because of all the electrical cords and what not laying around are a huge safety hazard. Not to mention the chance of some goof destroying your displays.
